In the last of the set, this Bapu has a soft smile, but an unapologetically piercing stare. The viewer is as much the focus of the painting as he is. With his chin on his hands, like he has all the time in the world, he playfully turns the conversation back to you, as if saying ".. and you? Tell me about you." A question we never quite know how to answer off guard.

The second piece in this portrait series came nearly 7 years after the first. I was curious to see how things might differ, and found a balance between planning and letting curiosity lead.
(The turban, for example, took on a life of its own — not the colour, shape, nor pattern I had in mind, but I went with what felt like the natural next step.)
It was sparked by a photograph of an older man, quietly in his own world, yet somehow meeting my gaze through the lens. I wanted to recreate that moment in watercolour, adding the small, absent-minded gesture of him twirling his moustache.
It felt like the perfect piece to play with contrast and complement — warm skin and background tones, set against cooler notes in the turban — while also testing out a few techniques I hadn’t used in a while.
Looking back, I can see how my approach has changed over time: a little more looseness, and a little more trust in the process.
